Render Rescue: A Failed Cottage Render in Wellow

When another contractor's render started falling off the walls, the owners called us. Here's the full story of how we stripped it back and put it right — properly, and with guarantees.

By Willy Wright · Wellow, Isle of Wight

This is the kind of job that's become something of a speciality for us — not because we enjoy seeing other people's work fail, but because we know how to put it right. A cottage in Wellow had been rendered by another contractor in an acrylic insulated system. Before long, the material began to come away from the walls.

The finished result — but getting here meant undoing someone else's mistakes first.

The problem

The render had been incorrectly applied. Whatever the reason — wrong specification, poor preparation, or a system that was never suited to the wall — the result was the same: the render lost its bond and began falling away from the cottage. For the owners it was worrying, expensive-looking, and a genuine risk to the building, because once render fails like this, water gets in behind what's left and the problem accelerates.

Why render fails like this

Render coming away in sheets almost always comes down to one thing: a bond that was never sound. It's usually a combination of the wrong system for the substrate and inadequate preparation. The lesson — which runs through everything we do — is that the system has to match the wall, and the preparation has to be right, or no finish will last.

The solution

There's no shortcut with a job like this. You can't patch over a failed system and hope. So we:

  1. Stripped it back completely. All the failed render came off, back to a sound surface we could trust.
  2. Installed a render carrier board. This gave us a stable, reliable base to build on — independent of whatever had caused the original failure.
  3. Applied a full silicone render system to manufacturer's specification. The right system, applied the right way, in the right number of coats.
  4. Registered the work for full guarantees. Because it was installed to specification, the job carries both product and installation guarantees.

The result

A cottage that was shedding its render now has a clean, durable silicone finish that's built to last — and the peace of mind of guarantees behind it. The owners got back a home they could stop worrying about. A promise kept, and done the Wright way.

If this sounds familiar

If your render is cracking, bulging, sounding hollow, or actually coming away from the wall, don't wait for it to get worse — and don't let whoever caused it talk you into another patch-up. The right fix starts with an honest assessment of what's actually gone wrong.
